Is affiliate marketing an option for online-based tech companies?

Hi everyone, I know about the concept of affiliate marketing but wanted to test this out as a selling technique. Does this only work for big internet giants or could a small custom software development company make this work, too? Does anyone have an experience with affiliation and know how to get strted with this? I am looking forward for your valuable advice.
